Body (Goal / Strategy / Tactics recap)

The essence of who I want to become is simple: a person at a heightened state of mind and body.

In terms of the ‘body’ aspect of this journey/transformation, I had always been on a wrong path. I had forgotten about my goal, and had my focus set on aesthetics of the body.

Aesthetics should be a by-product in achieving my goal, not the other way around.

Not anymore! I re-aligned my tactics to match my strategy and ultimately, the goal:

Goal: To become a person at a heightened state of ‘body’ (translation: to have a body with above average endurance, strength, agility, and range of motion)

Strategy: Start with foundation…, developing stronger core muscles.


(At home) turkish get-ups, ab wheel roller exercises, bent-over dumbbell rows (mb planche push ups)

(At gyms) add other compound exercises: dead lifts, squats, pull ups

More quantifiable milestones to come! In the meanwhile, I did my first TGU with dumbbell at home, trying to master the proper form. Much harder than it looks!

Leaking Pipe


At my company’s work retreat this summer, we were divided into small groups and participated in a team building competition. One of which looked something like the above. (Can’t believe I actually found the right image under the search query, ‘Leaking pipe + team’ Kudos to Google Images)

It was a simple one: at lake shore, small cups and a pipe with many holes with a small buoyant piece were given to each teams; then each team had to figure out the optimal numbers of runners vs., hole blockers to beat out other teams in filling up the pipe.

This exactly is how our memory retention abilities work. As we continue learning and acquiring head-aching amount of information, most sips right out of our cell membranes. And what about the competition part? I’m sure the ability to retain, will weigh heavily on our excellence in just about everything – including in your social/love life. ๐Ÿ˜‰

This is the reason, why I decided to come back to the blog-o-sphere.

Since I last wrote for my blog, I’ve continuously learnt and sought new knowledge. One of the notable examples, is my initiative in watching TED videos during my commute. However, since I don’t really take notes in my semi-sleeping state in the mornings and nights, I don’t quite remember most of the talks.

So here is me – again. Back for more; and more to give.

[book review] Talk Less, Say More – Connie Dieken

I’m currently doing the one book/mth-thing.

I read “Talk Less, Say More” by Connie Dieken, a communications guru.

Here’s the summary of her key points, to help me retain the lessons learnt:

The game of communicating comes down to three simple blocks: “connecting, conveying, and convincing”



1) Stay in the moment:
– pay attention to the people who are with you in the moment

2) Frontload:
– be more direct; reduce the clutter and drive your point home; choose their preferred method of communication; defuse defensiveness

3) Goldilocks candor:
– don’t demoralize; don’t sugarcoat; create a candid culture



1) The eyes trump the ears
– Show contrast

2) Talk in triplets:
– Preload three choices; desired choice first (second most desired choice last)

3) Tell stories:
– Stories that feature a positive future; think simple and spry; delivery with planned spontaneity



1)Sound decisive
– stop tagging and hedging; voice your opinions with sincereity

2)Transfer of ownership
– use peer power (testimonial); review your reasoning (intent); let it flow(reach out encouragement; respond; reinforce urgency; use thoughtful gestures)

3) Adjust your energy
– add warmth to your voice; add energy to your face; powerful body language

    Convey with portion control to create clarity, not confusion
    Convince them to personally commit and take a specific action

    Exercise Log: May

    It’s been awhile. But I’ve been good since I last logged about my exercises.

    Of course, I could do better on tracking and recording. I honestly need a some sort of a workout binder for it.

    For about 3 weeks or so, I’ve been doing my own half-assed “foundation stage.”

    And then I’ve been following one of the personal trainer’s pre-designed 29-week program.

    I just finished 1-3 weeks of his program.

    I swear the instruction on “rest” period between sets and exercises are confusing.

    BUT!!! I’ve gained about 6~8 pounds.


    But I also went up about 2% in body fat percentage. The idea is that I’m going to increase about 30 more pounds, and then cut out excess fat to return to my 10~11% body fat percentage, with about 20lbs of lean muscle.

    Gimme a year…a year…

    My (incomplete) Personal Health Profile

    My Personal Health Profile was incomplete for a reason; I won’t go into detail about it; but rest assured, I’m definitely going to do a proper one in a few weeks.

    However, I did get on the Tanita scale and got some stats on my body:

    Body Type: Standard (the only other choice is active/athletic which means you did regular exercise for 3~5 times a week…psshh that ain’t me)

    I’ll skip the gender / age

    Height: 6fft.
    Weight: 154.81lb
    BMR: 1794 kcal
    FAT%: 11.6%
    Fat Mass: 18.0lb
    FFM: 136.8lb (weight – fat mass)
    TBW: 100.2lb (total body water)
    My hydration level: (100.2 / 154.81 x 100) about 65%

    So if I want to build muscle apparently it’s advisable to bring up my hydration level to at least 70%.
    Also, to be able to see really cut abs, body fat % should go lower than 10%.
    And since I wanna get to 180 +/- 5lbs…so i need to raise 25lbs more.

    I can’t wait to get my complete personal health profile.
